An 1887 photograph of Rose and Crown Yard, demolished to make way for the Queen's Arcade, built in 1888-9. The Rose and Crown was an ancient inn, one of many coaching inns in Briggate, which also had a cock-pit; advertisements for cock-fights there appeared in the Leeds Intelligencer in the 1750's.
The earliest coach traced as operating from the Rose and Crown was the Defiance, which ran from 1783 between Leeds and Hull. The inn was always associated with the mail coaches, services for York, Sheffield, Scarborough, Manchester and Liverpool leaving from its yard. Edward Baines, who became proprietor of the Leeds Mercury, had his printing press in the yard at the end of the eighteenth century.
