Albion Place from Albion Street

On the right, Austin Reed menswear occupies part of the old YMCA building. Beyond William Hey's House on the left is the Leeds Club built in 1820 as residences for the son and grandson of William Hey. This magnificent building was converted into ‘The Leeds Club’, a place where the city’s leaders could meet. The Leeds Club was established at a meeting on March 23rd 1849 as the Union Club in the Leeds Stock Exchange. The Club leased two houses and these were purchased in 1861 for £5300. A scheme for extensive alterations by Thomas Ambler was approved and completed. In the 1860s this was an exclusive club with a joining fee of 20 guineas and an annual subscription rate of 5 guineas per annum. It was refurbished in Autumn 2007.
