Leeds Bridge

Leeds Bridge in 1945 view of the present bridge. The single-span iron bridge, designed by T. D. Steele of Newport, replaced the old stone bridge; the foundation stone was laid on 20 September 1871, and it was opened on 9 July 1873. The bridge was the scene of a historic moment in the birth of the cinema; in October 1888 Louis Augustin Le Prince photographed the first animated pictures ever made with a single-lens camera at 20 pictures per second, of the traffic on Leeds Bridge from a window in the premises of Hick Brothers, which can be seen on the right-hand side of the photograph.

Incidentally it is the Louis Le Prince animation which is used as the title graphic for the Leodis Database!
