In August 1915 part of the Gascoigne estate was chosen as the site for a National Shell Filling Factory. The site, known as Barnbow, was located between Cross Gates and Garforth, an area covering 313 acres which was later extended to 400. The architects, working for the Goverment, were Reed and McDonald and the firm of W. Irwin and Co. of Leeds were engaged as building contractors. In January 1916 the first portion of the Boiler House was completed, as seen here. The Yorkshire Electric Power Company was to supply the power to drive the heating pumps and provide lighting throughout the factory.
