This tour celebrates 80 years of public ownership of Temple Newsam House, one of the great historic houses of England. This fine Tudor-Jacobean mansion is situated in 1200 acres of parkland and houses stunning collections of paintings and works of art. Most of the photographs in the tour are from the early 1920's when it was acquired by Leeds City Council and the house first opened its doors to the public.
'Temple Newsam, the home of many noble men and women, birthplace of a king, is now the property of the people of Leeds in perpetuity. It is a trust as well as an inheritance.' (Official Opening of Temple Newsam, Guide Book, 1923)
