A turn of the century photograph by Alf Mattison. The Golden Lion, a hotel on the left-hand side of the photograph which is still in existence, is a Victorian replacement of the original coaching inn; the Old George, on the right, which closed as a licensed house in 1919, was one of the oldest inns in Leeds, referred to as 'an ancient and well accustomed house' in 1719. Charlotte Bronte described the interior of the inn when she included it as 'the George Inn at Millcote' in Jane Eyre. The North Eastern Railway Bridge was built between 1865 and 1869.
