Stone balustrading runs along the top of the walls, with a dutch-gabled style area in the centre which bears the date 1894. Also included is a beehive, signifying a 'Hive of Industry', with the company name below. Numbers run from 178 to 172 Tong Road, left to right. Number 178 is vacant. Number 176 offers dry-cleaning. Number 174 is the Butchering Department, signs in the window advertise 'New Zealand Lamb' and 'LICS delicious pork suasages at 2/10d per lb' (14½p). The door of this particular department also advertises the products, stating 'Home-cured Hams and Bacon. Try our Cooked Meats, pure and reliable'. The largest part of the shop follows to the right. This is the grocery department at number 172. Signs for LICS Instant Coffee at 2/-(10p) and Australian Choice Sliced Peaches at 1/6d(7½p) are visible. The shop also offers Ibcol Disinfectant at 1/6d, Fairy Liquid at 1/10d, Sunsip Orange at 2/6d and Handy Andy Cleaning Liquid at 1/6d. Packets of Corn Flakes can be seen stacked in the windows.
' I was married on 7th April 1947 and my mother in law was a real co-oper and on 12th April she joined us in the Co-op so I've been a member for 60 years. We used to go to the Armley Co-op and I used to put away 10 shillings and it bought all my groceries.'
