Main Hall

1970s interior view of the main hall, part of the extension built by Colonel Frederick R.T.T. Gascoigne in 1903. The dining table dates from the 17th century and the plasterwork is 17th century in style. The huge portrait is that of Sir Thomas Gascoigne, 8th Baronet (1745-1810). It dates from 1779 and was painted in Rome by Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787). Through the doorway there is a glimpse into the Drawing Room where the Grand Piano is visible. The instrument was made by Erard of London and the sycamore case was the work of Marsh & Jones of Leeds and dates from around 1870. The Drawing Room is also part of the alterations made in 1903.
