Leeds Bridge - North Street tour

Briggate and Duncan Street

Briggate and Duncan Street, looking east, in 1902. Electric trams and 'that most objectionable of urban complaints' - the steam tram- ran thorugh here. The first experimental runs with steam trams were made in 1877, and they rapidly took over as the only means of traction on the Headingley and Wortley routes. The first electric tramway in Europe to be operated via the overhead wire began operating on the Roundhay route in October 1891; the electric line from Roundhay to Kirkstall opened in 1897. The last steam tram ran in April 1902.
