Conductors and Orchestras

Sir Charles Groves who conducted his Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concerto Finals from 1966 until 1984 was also a member of the Jury in the 1972 and 1975 competitions. John Pritchard who conducted the 1963 finals undertook a similar dual role.

Norman Del Mar was on the podium for the 1978 finals.

Simon Rattle at the helm of his acclaimed city of Birmingham Orchestra accompanied contestants in the concerto finals of five competitions: 1987, 1990, 1993, 1996 and 2000.

A new chapter opened in 2003: The Halle Orchestra conducted by its Music Director, Mark Elder, accompanied the six finalists. Elder eloquently introduced each soloist and his/her chosen concerto.
