The Theatres

This is an outline of the history of the major theatres in Leeds, from 1771 to the present day, with information about their location, early management, and the different types of entertainment they put on.

There is an enormous amount of material on the history of the theatre in Leeds, and it has been impossible to cover everything here; smaller theatres and theatre companies have not been included.

The Local Studies Library has a large collection of playbills, which will be soon be available from the Leodis site. It is intended that the history of the theatres given here will provide background information to the playbills collection. Also, the playbills used as illustrations here will be able to be seen on the site.
