8th February 1927 The Lord Mayor, Alderman Hugh Lupton, inspects a locomotive alongside the Messrs Kitson. Founded by James Kitson in 1835, the engineering business at Airedale Foundry in Hunslet was to become world famous for its manufacture of locomotives. The first one was built in 1837 by James Kitson and Charles Todd. His son, James Kitson was the very first Lord Mayor of Leeds in 1897, and was raised to the peerage of Lord Airedale in 1907.
