1893. Postcard view of miners on strike at Tanhouse Pit. The postcard is entitled 'Coal Famine at Churwell, 1893. The coal strike of 1893 affected all the mines in this area and was a very long and bitter struggle. Here, miners are scratting for coal on a tip heap to warm their own homes. The pit flooded during the strike and never opened again. The miners then went to work at Woolley Colliery. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.
