Bridge Court

Bridge Court
Description:
1901. Situated off Bridge Street, between Nile Street and Trafalgar Street, area of dense housing. An open gutter can be seen in the yard illustrating the insanitary conditions which led to this area being classed as 'unhealthy'. Many of the residents in the Leylands area were of Jewish origin, large numbers worked in the tailoring shops.

My great grandparents Abraham and Leah (nee Wagenheim) Goldwater lived at no 3 Bridge St in the 1890s. They were Jewish and were married in Latvia, Leah was from Lithuniania and Abraham from Western Siberia. Abraham was a bootmaker at the time but there were Machinist and Pressers living with them (also from Russia). They moved to Glasgow about the turn of the century where my grandfather Louis was recorded in the 1901 census as a tailor as were his younger siblings.

My aunt's father, Julius Lieberman, had a kosher butcher's shop in Bridge Street around the turn of the 20th century around the time of this photo. His children and grandchildren became doctors, lawyers, research scientists, engineers.....

These children are lined up to make a gang-way. Apart from the camera man, I wonder what was heading towards that 'entry'?
