View of an ancient milestone at the junction of Alwoodley Lane and the east side of King Lane. The photograph is taken looking from King Lane. The millstone grit milestone is grade II listed and is dated 1664 or 1764 according to the information given by English Heritage. It stands approximately 1 metre high and is 0.4m wide with a semicircular top. The surface is smooth with incised lettering on the sides facing King Lane and Alwoodley Lane, but is roughly shaped on the back. The inscription to the front facing King Lane reads 'I. B., 1764, To Leedes 4 M and there is a pointing hand; To Otley, 5 M and another pointing hand'. The side facing Alwoodley Lane (not seen) reads,'To York, 20 M (pointing hand); To Wetherbey, 9 M'. The right return is inscribed with '(?)1821,GD'and is believed to date from the time the stone was moved and re-set close to the original position. (English Heritage, British Listed Buildings).
