Many of us would be a little hazy, as to where this was. However having fished out an old map it's the corner of where the Lewis's building stands with Mark Lane. Lewis's rear and loading area facing St John's Church to the right. Shame we lost such decorative buildings for concrete and brick block. Always enjoyed shopping at Lewis's though.

Hats off to John Bean for his excellent description of where this was. However, those of us of an age to even know that there 'is' a Mark Lane, and there is a St. John's Church, let alone where they still are, must find this photo difficult to understand. As John rightly states, Lewis's Department Store would eventually stand on this site, but therein lies the puzzle, because the Lewis's building seen from this view, wasn't wide enough to occupy the whole of this site. And that is due not to what was here in 1928, but what wasn't, and that was the Headrow. By 1930, the two streets - Upperhead Row, and Lowerhead Row - demarcated at Briggate, would both be tripled in width, and renamed The Headrow we now know. The narrowness of the original Upperhead Row can just be seen at the extreme left of this view as a space between the buildings. The creation of a brand new road known to us as Eastgate - as the continuation of the new Headrow, would follow in 1932.
