Description:
1901. View of Billet Yard, situated at the top of Cross Billet Street. Poor conditions of homes can be seen, with drain in the centre of the street and outside toilets. This was part of the Leeds Unhealthy Areas improvement scheme; an attempt to eradicate the worst housing conditions in the City.

My great x 3 grandparents Samuel Milnes and Jane Emmery, and their daughter Mary Milnes (my great great grandmother) lived there in 1841.

My ancestor Daniel Harvey lived in Billet Yard sometimes down as living in Billet Street in 1840s/50s. Daniel was a coal merchant he lived with his Wife Ann Daughters Mary and Sarah, Mary married John Rollinson in 1842 they had 2 children John and Eliza she became a Widow in 1846, returned to live with her Parents. She married my 4 x Great Grandad William Barker a shoe maker 1st Nov 1851. The Barker family lived in Wards Court later High Street a short distance from Billet Yard. Mary and William had 6 children one being Richard born April 1854 my ancestor. Sadly Mary became a Widow again when William died of fever aged 46yrs, the Barker family are buried in a family grave which includes Marys Children by her first Husband Eliza aged 3yrs, John Rollingson 28ys and Marys Father Daniel Harvey in Beckett Street Cemetery. 17th August 2017
