This is at the junction of Gipton Approach and Wkebeck valley road, after the tram track was laid on Gipton approach it was found to be far to steep therefor a cutting was excavated to lessen the graidient

This is a post-war view, perhaps very early fifties. This type of tram had individual two-wheel trucks each of which pivoted so that on a curve each would follow the track for a smooth ride. This worked well at first but with poor maintenance the trucks ceased to pivot and the resulting 'straight' truck with effectively a very long wheelbase played havoc with the tracks making maintenace costs very high. Although some had their trucks replaced with a proper short wheel-base rigid type, by that time the damage had been done and probably contributed to the decision in 1953 to gradually abandon the tramway system.

This was the tram I went on to visit my Grandmother in Dewsbury Road. She is long gone. I am now 71 years of age.

Trams from here (Gipton) used to run to Lower Wortley (Route No 19) this was in the late 30s early 40s, I have no ides when this route was abandoned.
