The very ancient tradition of raising and lowering the Maypole has its roots in Pre-Roman times. The ceremony is performed every three years, celebrated with dancing, floats, a May Queen and attendants. By tradition, three pole men were elected to raise and lower the Maypole, having been appointed at a public meeting, held by the Cross. After 1951 it was decided to have a Maypole Committee. This old and cherished tradition is now in jeopardy, as insurance costs escalate.
