Caldwell Spruce had at one time been a designer at the Leeds Pottery. Seen here in his studio finishing a bust of Lord Airedale, first Lord Mayor of Leeds. He had not met Lord Airedale and worked from photographs. The bust was presented to the city by Sir William Middlebrook. It is in the Leeds City Art Gallery.
