We lived in Castleford from 1954 to 1961 at 8 Carlton Street which is jut around the corner from Bridge Street. Flooding used to be quite common in those days, before the extensive flood defences were built. I think it's worth mentioning that when the River Aire flooded, water came up the street gulleys which is why sandbags have been put round them here, but they have obviously failed to contain the water. IIRC, these particular floods were unusually severe and covered a lot of the low-lying land between Cas and Methley. The view when going to Leeds by train was more like looking out from a boat. This isn't in Leeds and never has been so I'm a bit surprised that it's on Leodis, although I'm not complaining about a reminder of my youth.
