The Nookin.
Undated. View of the Nookin from Leeds Road. The date on the beam says 1611, though it is thought to be the date of the restoration and the building is thought to be at least a century older. A report by Leeds University give the information 'Although the main structure of the house is wood, it contains neither nails or screws but is pinned together with wooded peas'. The main beams appear to be Pre-Norman and still in good condition.

A possibly 16th century building, with its main beams seemingly pre-dating the Norman Invasion, and the whole timber structure pinned together with wooden pegs. - - - A superb Mediæval building that has survived, in all its glory, through the centuries, right up to the present day. - - - It nearly didn't though! - - - Only a few decades ago, this building was under threat of demolition. Via which process of mindless disregard, did those responsible for such insensitive proposals arrive at such a decision? Were expressions such as:- 'Conservation' - 'Preservation' - 'Heritage' - 'Historical Interest', unknown to them? Fortunately there was a groundswell of common-sense which managed to overwhelm what must have been seen to be, the unconquerable entrenched mindset of blinkered insanity that was posturising at that time. All credit must be given to those who banded together and successfully challenged seemingly unanswerable authoritarianism.
