The foliage emitting from the mouth of this sculpture seems to tell us that we are looking at an image of a "Green Man". However, the purists who luxuriate within the idea and genre of this legendary verdant deity and his wild woodland paradise, would tell us that as there is no greenery emerging from his eyes or ears, he is slightly lower down the hierarchical deification scale than his fully fledged counterpart, and would be classed as a "Foliate Man". This stonework presents us with an impressive image. It is a pity that the description does not credit the sculptor.
