Roundhay Road, Rapid Tramway Track

Roundhay Road, Rapid Tramway Track
Description:
19th July 1922. View of a section of Roundhay Road showing rapid tramway track running parallel to road. The photograph is thought to have been taken from the opposite side of what was to become Gledhow Valley Road, looking north towards Oakwood. A cinder footpath is visible on the right.

This is the section of 'reserved track' tramway which ran from the Clock Cinema to a point near Oakwood Clock, where it rejoined the public highway.

The actual point is where the Roundhay pub is now. The building in the back left is the old Gipton pub wich had a lodge to the left into the 60's. The Ravenscar's are behind. To the left is Gipton Wood. In the middle distance the tramway crossing can be seen which to this day has a bus stop and the footpath up through the woods. Grew up as a boy around these parts in the 50's.

The Gipton public house had a very pleasant bowling green at the rear which extended to Ravenscar Walk where in the 1920s my grandfather and grandmother lived and ran the corner shop. Almost opposite the pub and sitting on the wall separating Gipton wood and the tram track, I watched King George V and Queen Mary drive past in an open carriage when visiting Leeds during the 25th anniversary celebrations of their reign.

In my previous message the Royal event that the King & Queen attended was the opening of the Civic Hall not their 25th Anniversary. Sorry, my mistake.
