Meanwood Beck, footbridge near Switchgear
Description:
12th October 1936. Situated to the rear of Yorkshire the bridge was part of a patch from Meanwood Road through to Woodhouse Ridge. It was a part of the park known as Batty's Wood an area of oak woodland. Thought to be the site of the Battle of Meanwood Valley in 1643, Parliamentarian forces defeated a troop of Royalists as they were moving through to attack Leeds from the East.

I remember this bridge very well, me and my brother Desie, Terry Atkinson and others, every weekend and holidays would venture here because to the right is a very steep hill, at the top of that hill was a huge tree with a thick rope dangling down fron a very high branch, the bottom of the rope had a big bulbous knot in it so you could swing otu and sit on it, and on occasion a friend would jump and grab the rope and you would both be spinning over the swampy bit at the bottom of the hill. Well my friend decided when I was on the swing and began to swing out he would and catch the rope and while he was in the air I pulled rope towards me and he missed and fell down the hill into the swamp and brokes his arm, but a good time was had by all
