19th September 1963 Group portrait of miners taken after a sit down strike at Savile Pit Bottom. They had been demanding extra pay for working a difficult coal face and came up after three days when the management agreed to discuss their grievance. Savile Colliery was located in Mickletown, a mining village near Methley.

I worked down Savile colliery till joining the army in Jan1958.Now i am wondering about the chap third from the right at back with his hand in the air.Is he (George Aveyard)?He lived in Sott Hall Road Leeds,near me.We used to travel to work together in the fifties.When i left, he was a filler in the newly developed Flockton seam.I was a filler on (Browns Board 1)in the beeston seam.Could anybody verify(I am 99% sure).Comment made 20 Aug 2006.

The man in the front row 2nd from the left was my father Andrew (Danny) Thornton who died last year. I understand their is a photograph of them all in the Bay Horse pub afterwards.

I also worked in the flockton seam 1957 till about1961 Frank Wright was the shot firer,His father Harry Wright also worked down Saville Pit.Dave Appleyard and Fred Worth were just a couple of friends .

If i remember right Geoff, Harry Wright was the pit overman. I believe also, brothers Jack Wright, and Edwin Wright, pit Deputies, were also related to them. Edwin Wright was the Deputy on the training coal face in the Beeston Seam in 1955/6 when me and George Aveyard in this picture, did our COAL FACE training. Jack was a smashin fella. When i came out of the army, it was HARRY WRIGHT who would have set me back on. Unfortunately, there were no longer any old fashioned coal faces. It had all become MECHANISED. SHEARING MACHINES, and HYDROLIC WALKING CHOCKS, which required a different kind of training. So Harry gave me a reference to take to ROTHWELL ( FANNY ) PIT. Where they had both types of coal face. I worked there about 9 years, 8 yrs, of which was as a DEPUTY & SHOTFIRER. 11-JUNE-08.

I went to Whitwood Mining and Technical Colledge on a Deputies training course with a Danny Thornton, I am sure that is him second left front row. Sorry to hear he has passed away.
