Description: 1st July 1939.
Anderson shelter in the garden of 39 Rookwood Crescent. Designed by then Home Secretary Sir John Anderson to provide protection against air raids for families. They were made of six curved panels of corrugated steel panels which were bolted together. A hole measuring around 10 foot by 4 foot was dug and the shelter was erected in it. The roof was usually covered with soil and turf for extra protection. They were provided free for families earning less than £250 per year.
