Plan of Leeds Pottery, Jack Lane

Plan of Leeds Pottery, Jack Lane
Description:
Undated. Plan of the Leeds Pottery. The south side borders Jack Lane while the northside adjoins the old wagon road from Middleton Colliery to Leeds. Colliery owners paid Leeds Pottery £7 annually for the line to run through the yard and subsided the price of coal. However the pottery gained great advantages from wagons travelling from the colliery direct to the kilns. Kilns, sheds and offices are south east of the line which is located on the north west. On the far right of the plan a weighing machine is marked. Across the Waggon Road from this is a large residence now divided into two properties, presumably connected to the pottery. Above this the Leeds Pottery Flint Mill is marked, with a windmill in the centre; it appears that flint grinding took place here after the process was transferred from the Pottery's premises at Thorpe Arch in 1814. In the centre of the image above the Pottery works is a mill labelled "Sagar Mill"; what sort of mill this was or what connection it had to the Pottery is not known.

Comment:
More or less bang in the middle of this image, and sitting close to the Waggon Road, can be seen the plan of a small circular structure. The wording around it is rather indistinct, but Leodis can confirm that it reads:- SAGAR MILL. Its shape and name does imply the status of, 'Windmill'. The name seems to imply that it may not be part of The Leeds Pottery, or even within the bounds of same, but there are no clues as to its 'raison d'être'. - - - Is there anyone out there who has the name 'Sagar' within their family history and which might be associated with this particular windmill?
