As a child, we moved to Regency Court Flats, behind the Bear Pit in 1957. My friends and I played in the ruins and built dens in the 'wood' surrounding it for many years - well before it was rebuilt. A great piece of 19th century archaeology but also an important play space for many years!

ah, memories....this image is how I remember it - we used to play here after school (St Micks) in the early 70s. I was surprised to see the poor state of it on a recent visit and I do hope they don't let it disintegrate any further.

I remember exploring this relic many years ago when I used to work out of one of the shops on North Lane in Headingley. I seem to recall that, reading one of the information plaques that were placed in the site at that time, that this is not the original location of the Bear Pit. I believe it was once part of a zoological exhibition that was in a park somewhere off Otley Road in Headingley. I have a vague recolection of discovering an overgrown entrance to some structure, which looked like a gateway, into a really overgrown area, reported to have been the site of such a zoological display. Perhaps someone else knows of such a site, It may not have been off Otley Road, I could be mistaken, but it was definitely in the Headingley area somewhere.
