Meanwood Road, Oatland Road
Description:
November 1981 Image shows Meanwood Road on the left and Oatland Road on the right. An advertising hoarding on the left promotes Guinness while the parade of shops include an off licence and grocery, the Royal Fisheries and Stakewise Racing Ltd. At the end of the parade on the right is the Globe public house with the gas works at Sheepscar visible behind.

Where the cars are parked,has got to be the site where the(Royal Picture House)stood.Right opposite (Oatland Road).Comment made Aug 2006.

The cars parked on the left are on the site where the Royal Cinema had been situated.Also the building behind them which is part of the Kingfishers works, I think.

I lived at the top of Oatland Rd in Bristol Rd and the Royal Cinema was a regular haunt for us kids,I still cringe when I recal my aunt,who I lived with,reminds me that I used to pester her when I was a child to be taken to see Loy Logers at the Loyal.I fondly remember the music TRISH TRASH POLKA being played after the playing of the national anthem to hurry everyone out.

i to fondly remember the Royal picture house as just living close by facing Buslingthorpe school on Meanwood road we often went 2 or 3 times a week in the 50s,i remember if it was an "A" film we would ask people in the queue "would you take 2 in please as you had to have an adult with you, innocent days, john godfrey was great to see your remarks i remember you so well would be great if you got in touch
