November 1981. Image shows a view looking north up Meanwood Road from the junction of Cambridge Road. On the left are a parade of shops including a newsagents selling Silk Cut cigarettes, an electrical shop and the Rosco clothing company. In the foreground is a zebra crossing and in the distance Sugar Well Hill.

I worked at Roscoe Clothing Co from 1970-74, in 1973 the company was taken over by The Brightbart Brothers. At the back across the yard of Roscoe's was an Asian factory that made cardigans and pullovers.

And a bit further back from the photographer on the right was meanwood road all girls shool.Then at the right side of the school you could go down a long narrow ginnel to a dead end at meanwood beck. I'm not sure at this point it may have become sheepscar beck. Turn right, go along about 20 yds and you could go left over a very narrow bridge and up again along a narrow ginnel, passing a long wall on the left, over which was a burnt out biscuit factory.So my mother told me.At the end of the ginnel on the left was (Fred Steads Tannery)and Sheepscar Street North.Leading to scott hall road. Comment made 2006.

Meanwood Road was not an "all girls" school , it was a mixed infants and girls only juniors-from 7 years. Iattended this school until I was 13.

I can confirm the school was not all girl school as I attended there when I left the Sheepscar Nursery. I met my first girlfriend there her name was Anita Beecroft, although it wasn't to last she left to go to another school.The caretaker there was a scary looking man named Mr Black

I used to attend Buslingthorpe School just along Meanwood Road. We had to go to Meanwood Road infants school to get our cuts and grazes treated by the nurse there. She was also the nit nurse with her fine tooth steel comb. We would go to see her for cuts and come away with dappled purple hair.She would distract you before ripping off plasters from cuts in one quick go!

Yes Mr Whitfield, Bellwoods did have the fish and chip shop. The bakers shop in the parade would have been Potters in the same period, they sold bags of cake trimmings and broken buns for a 1d. To the left in this view the off-licence shop which was at the junction of Cambridge Road and Meanwood Road has been demolished.

opposite this parade of shops sandwiched between the swmming baths and the school I dont know if i've got it right, it was such a long time ago, I worked at the c.w.s. Boot and Shoe Factory in the Wages department. It must have been in the 1950's to the sixties, I remember the Tannery, just at the bottom. It was quite a big factory below us and we had a rather large canteen, and every christmas we had a big party for us and our families.

I attended busling thorpe school and can remember my teachers name mrs smith iwas there in 1965 ialso remember my brothers friend being killed on the crossing they had both been swiming i do believe his parents ran the chip shop

Education Road ran between Meanwood Road school and the swimming baths, the CWS shoe factory was located on the rh side of Education Road behind the school.To the left, behind the swimming baths and wash house was an area of waste ground.

Dobsons WAS the newsagent and sweet shop, I went to Meanwood Road School with the daughter, Margaret I think. Might have been Brenda. I once went to a birthday party in their living quarters, upstairs from the shop, and we played games like Hunt the Mars bar. During rationing time this was very exciting. Learned to swim at the baths and to ride a bike on Education Road. I lived on Servia Terrace, the second street up on the left of Cambridge Road and I loved the Off licence on the corner because it came to a point, where the door was. Trams ran to town down from Meanwood, buses down Cambridge Road.

hi i went to buslingthorpe school and my 2 sisters carol and wendy went to meanwood road school. we lived off oxford road which was where the bus is on the photo,on clayfield terr. we spent most of our time at the swimming baths opposite these shops or at the royal cinema just a bit further down meanwood road.

What wonderful memories I have of this little parade. My grandmother's sister, Jenny Laverack worked for nearly 30 years of her life and the small family owned bakery of Potters from the 30s' into the 50s'. as a small child my grandmother would call with me in tow, in to the shop to see Jenny and I would always be given a treat (some little cake etc) which was certainly a big treat as everything was on ration and sweets were scarce. This parade faced Meanwood Baths and so benefitted from the trade of hungry swimmers on their way home. I remember being 5 years old and being invited to the Potters' Christmas Party (they, (like the Queen) lived over the shop and being threatened with "no jelly" unless I sang a Christmas Carol for them all. I was petrified but did make an attempt. They had an only daughter called Margaret and I often wondered what happened to her.

This photograph is very nostalgic for me at the end there is the Rosco factory where both my parents met and married. The third small shop along was a small, privately owned bakery called Potters. Mr Potter did all the baking with the help of just one assistant and Mrs potter ran the business (she was of spanish origin) - dark and vivatious. My aunt Jenny worked for Potters for nearly 30 years - in the late 40s' when I was just a little child, my grandmother would take me in the shop and I would always be made a fuss of - there was always some little bun or piece of confectionery for me - this of course was a great treat as there was still strict rationing. It is sad to see some of the parade missing as it was such a vibrant little area with all kinds of small business round and about.

When I attended Meanwood Rd school in the early 40's. our teacher would choose one lucky child to go and collect her bakery order. For this we were give half a fairy cake! I think the teacher was called Miss Richardson.

We have all heard the expresion "When I were a lad",well this view takes me back to the late 1940s,when I were a lad.On saturday afternoon ,it was my duty to push a pram full of our families dirty clothes from Camp Rd,down Oatland Rd to here where I would hand it over to my Aunt < who I lived with > who would proceed down Education Rd to the corporation washouse.I nipped into Meanwood Rd baths,for a grown up slipper bath instead of the galvanised tin one which hung on our cellar door.Afterwards we would meet up and push the pram back home again.It was 1957 before she purchased her first washing m/c.

i lived in clayfield street from 1949 till 1960 my dad was edward harrison my mum was margaret i was a friend of pat dansby her mum and dad had a shop near were i lived my street was next to buggy park also i was friends with alan who lived opposit my house he hade a sister susan and a brother philip.

I married in 1961 and we lived in a back to back house, 13, Prosperity Street. Near the Servias and off Camp Road. I used the washouse off Meanwood Road and also the slipper bath until we bought a tin bath, and a second-hand hoover washing machine with wringer.We left this area in late 1964.
