I worked at Binns of Leeds between 1968-69. It was my first job on leaving Sctthall County Secondary School. I was apprenticed to Jack Nicholson - the company's auto electrician but we didn't get along. He thought I should seek a new career - it was good advice. Binns lost the Ford dealership at this time and acquired the Opel (GM) franchise which were very futuristic at the time. In addition to the driving school, we also had a car and minibus hire service. It was a family company. I remember the moustachioed George Binns very well - he look like a diminutive ex RAF man. He had a son called John. The head salesman was called Tim, and one of the mechanics who sticks in my mind was Alan Grogan - a former paratrooper who taught me to leap from the top of a removal truck without injury. (Well, that was the theory anyway). Where are they now?

I remember the shop on the corner very well, it was where we used to go for dripping breadcakes, bacon sarnys etc every Saturday morning, it was a large order for the workers at H.Brown clothing manufacturers higher up on Bus Lane, Happy Days when industry was still alive in Leeds early 1960
