Description: Undated, This aerial view of Swarcliffe dates from the 1960s. In the foreground, the bottom edge, Barwick Road runs from left to right. Moving back, Swarclife Drive runs parallel to this with Elmete Towers above on the left. Eastwood Lane runs from the centre of the bottom edge and curves towards the right where two more tower blocks are situated Swarcliffe Towers and Manston Towers. On the right edge, the Whinmoor public house is just visible. Swarcliffe Primary School can be seen in the top left corner. User Comments: Name: Sharon Lynn Richardson (formerly Monaghan) Comment: My Gran and Grandad lived at 56 Eastwood Lane in the late 50s. Grandad was the nightwatchman on the building site for the 10 storey flats over the road from their house. Before the Whinmoor estate was developed we kids used to roam all over those fields, where the Whinmoor pub is now sited was originally a farm, I can remember the orchard it had. We used to wonder all over the fields and up spinney towards Scholes and get chased by old Chipey who used to live at the quarry. His geese were really fierce. The two blocks of flats in the top right have now been demolished and a residential home now sits on that site. I remember Chippy´s Quarry and the thousands of tadpoles there! I also remember the farm house/smithy? where the Whinmoor pub is now. I once saw a cow or two in our front garden that had wandered over from the fields. We lived there from the 60's until my mum Rita Spirrett moved about 5 years age. Went to St Gregorys School then St Kevins. Used to drink in the WHinmoor, "Cat" & The Staging Post. I used to live in Mill Green Place (born there). Went to school at Swarcliffe in the sixties then moved to Stanks Drive in the late 60's. Spent some time in those woods. Its interesting to see the old stomping ground. I had a similar experience with Mr Chippy on my way to catch some stickle backs (fish) in the quarry. Got scolded many times for coming home wet from playing in the beck. On our way to school we would go through the woods in the photo, hide five fags then take five to school. I also played at the beck doing duffs, nesting in the fields. We uses to go fishing at chippy's quarry. We found many old things there, old news papers dating back to 1909. It was interesting to read about the football teams, Bradford city was at the top of the league then. We didn’t understand the value of those news papers. They may have been worth something. I live in Italy now, but when I get a chance to go home, I go back there because I love it. Ciao Email: phil.teale@alice.it ________________________________________________________________________________ Name: John Fulton Comment: What a lovely photo ,memories come flooding back , we lived on stanks rise and this whole area was my stomping ground , i went to little manston school ,then swarcliffe ,great memories of the big hill, chippy,s quarry was a favourite haunt ,we used to walk along the old railway searching for frogs , bike it to scholes and aberford in the summer , make bogie carts and zoom down whinmoor way , the shops were great too , i remember trickets ,you could get anything in there also joe brown the green grocer and the meadow and the chippy of course , great shops ,more atmosphere than todays supermarkets , it was a nice place to live ,some wonderful memories of neighbours and old friends and going to watch sunday football in manston park with a bottle of jusoda and a five boys chocolate bar ,happy times ... We all watched as our playground(the fields)were built over. I too remeber the farm with the orchard, we used to go apple scrumping there and also the plant nursery at the top of our street. I survived chippys quarry, especialy one winter when I fell in after standing on the ice, my mates got me out. I had many happy years at Swarcliffe school in the 60's, my grandaughter goes there now. Les Brooks was the first landlord and it was a beautiful pub in its day, but sadly it has been going downhill for donkeys years! We moved up to Swarcliffe from the Gipton estate in 1952 when I was 4/5 years old. Eastwood lane was the first street to be built on the Swarcliffe and we were surrounded by open fields at that time. I remember the farm that was there before the pub and the huge orchard that was at the side of it, which is now Stanks Lane south and facing where Bill Switchgears was, but that was to arrive quite a few years later! Before the two blocks of flats were built there used to be a huge oak tree, that all the kids played on. The open field used to be call the "Old Holler", a corruption of hollow I suppose. Used to have loads of fun down the beck or up at Chippys quarry. I used to knock about with Graham Winstanley, Stanley Craven, Johnnie Green, Tony Perrot and loads of others too numerous to name. We moved to 174 Stanks Lane Sth in the late 50s until we migrated to Australia in 1965. Fond memories of playing in those fields, picking flowers and being chased by Nip and Bess when it was still farmland. Spent many happy hours at the Whinmoor pub when the Brooks family ran it - Played with daught er Leslie. I remember running down to Trickets with my 3d to buy 2oz of aniseed twists or one of those toffee lollies with a choc coating. And the smell of ham as you walked into Charnleys the butcher/bakery/deli. Lovey memories of playing out in the streets with anyone and everyone and wandering into neighbours houses, bonfires on the small green next to Switchgears, everyone knowing each other, picking bluebells in the bluebell wood to and from school and whizzing up and down the slopes on a milk crate wen it snowed. It seems like everyone remembers Chippies Quarry. I lived in Stanks Lane North and went to Swarchliffe for about 9 years as when I was just about to leave they made it into a middle school. It seems like the photo was taken before the Swarcliffe Club was built, I remember the kids Christmas parties there and the big bars of Cadburys chocolate they gave us. Later on we enjoyed the Staging Post on a Friday night and the Whinmoor disco on a Sunday afternoon. Happy Days. Many happy hours were spent playing in the woods, the fields were our cricket and football pitches and in November, a huge bonfire was lit, which most of the kids had built from 'chumping' (is that the correct spelling). PC Young lived in the first house, next door were the Cravens (Stanley was a friend), then another Young family (Tony), the Phillips came next, ??, then the Hoggs, us the Dixons, the Kirkhams..can't remember the rest. The Hedges lived nearby, as did the Spences, Greenes and Sirrels...we all played together in those far off days. What wonderful memories I still have of my childhood in Swarcliffe. They lived at 56 Elmet Towers. Mum,Edna Harrison,now lives in one of the bungalows in Elmet Way, just adjacent to the Towers. My wife,Christine,nee Harrison,never lived there because we were then married and live in Australia.
