Description: Undated, This aerial view dates from the 1960s. Barwick Road runs from left to right across the lower half of this view. Towards the left is the junction with Penda's Way which runs from the bottom edge. The Cock Beck public house is situated just below this junction. This pub is still running today. Stanks Drive begins in the centre of the left edge runs to the right then curves up towards the top edge. User Comments: Name: Tania Wilson Comment: I lived at 41 Stanks Drive from 1984 - 2000. I didnt realise that the road was only half built in the sixties as now it goes up to about 300 houses almost joining york Road. I was 6 years old. I remember playing in the fields between Stanks Rise and York Road. Also I beleive that the site to the bottom right where barwick Road crossed Cock beck os the site of the battle of Winweadfield a battle between King Penda of Mercia and Oswy of Northumberland. The name Stanks is a saxon word meaning "Wells". I had the Stanks Lane South evening paper round which took in Stanks Lane South, Eastwood Lane and Crescent, Some of Eastwood Drive and Ash Tree Approach. This would have been about 1970 to 1973 ish. Tom Hudson would deliver the papers to us outside the Chip shop on Stanks Parade and off we went. I also did the collecting round on a Sunday Morning, Many a time I would have upto £250 in my leather bag, and I never got touched, not once. Apologies if you got a torn newspaper.
