Richard Wormald a Leeds Woollen merchant became owner of the Cookridge estate around 1820. The icehouse was one of the improvements that he instigated. This was a construction with a 4 foot high door, leading to a brick lined corridor then to a 12 foot well. The winter meat, fish and game were hung from two racks on the ceiling of the corridor, the low temperature would keep the food fresh for almost a year.
