Description: Undated, Aerial view of the Gipton area. In the top left corner are fields which lay behind Killingbeck Hospital, off Wykebeck Valley Road. Up to the right corner area of housing is Coldcotes Circus, then a corner of Harehills Park is in view. Bottom right Foundry Drive has a roundabout then the Fairway public house. User Comments: Name: francis gardiner Comment: i used to live in the gipton area thorn drive to be exact i left in 1994 to move to ireland i would say by the look of this photo i would say it was around the early 50's due to the lack of flats and masonets when i left there was four masonet flats which were knocked down around 95 and replaced by house's and there was a another large set of flats just around the corner of thorn drive accompanied by masonets Email: Not displayed ________________________________________________________________________________ Name: P Jeffreys Comment: I would say that its pre 60's as there is no flats built on wykebeck valley road. I lived on Oak Tree Drive,and watched all the developements take place. The manager was KEN HARRISON. He was a COAL FACE OVERMAN at ROTHWELL COLLIERY during my time as a COALFACE DEPUTY & SHOT FIRER. We both worked on the same coal face. I think we both could have written a book about those times. Ken left and went straight into PUB MANAGEMENT TRAINING at the COMPTON PUBLIC HOUSE on COMPTON ROAD HAREHILLS. This was a TETLEY'S house. On completion He got the job in a JOHN SMITHS HOUSE namely the FAIRWAY. By this time i had left the Pit also, and was working nearby, at BURTONS HIGHSTREET TRANSPORT. Comm. 11-Oct-07. The two roads streaming away - upward, and to the left, from the roundabout, are both downward steep hills. The dual-carriageway - properly named Oak Tree Drive, was locally known as Fairway Hill after the pub at its crest. The last time I drove down this road, it had the most horrendous rubber speed-humps. As far as dating the picture is concerned, by 1964 the scene would have had many more blocks of flats which included Briarsdale Heights into which my girlfriend was rehoused from Beckett St. Briarsdale Heights stands on the square of land to the left of the block in the centre of this picture. It cost £250,000 to build and was all-electric, including under-floor heating which made your feet itch. And to see Francis Gardner placing a comment on here too! I was a very close friend of his back then, I still live on Foundry Avenue as you can see it in the bottom right hand corner. In 1955 my family moved to Coldcotes Circus to a pre war house which had a much nicer view than the view of Harehills Cemetery which our previous house had. I moved away completely in 1967 on my marriage .From what I remember the flats at the top of the Fairway Hill were already built by then. Very fond memories of the Gipton. Date: 16-Aug-2009 Email: Not displayed ________________________________________________________________________________ Name: Claire Brennan Comment: I first moved to Gipton in 1977, first living on North Farm Rd, that can be seen from the mid point junction of Oak Tree Drive and continues all the way down to meet up with the north-end junction of Coldcoltes Circus.I then moved to my own house, in 1985, situated on Oak Tree Drive, as can be seen behind the Gipton Gate East flats.I raised 2 lovely girls there and have very fond memories of the lovely neighbours that lived there in the mid eighties, especially Maggie and Jonnie who lived next door, they were the first and only tenants of their house until 1995. We lived there until 1996,we then moved out of the central Leeds area. It is amazing how the area has changed over recent decades.This photo was taken prior to the building of Braisdale Heights {forgive the spelling if incorrect} in the 60's. I remember we had family who lived around the coldcotes area. Went to Thorn Walk primary and then I had just started North Farm School in 1976 when mum died and we left to live in Jersey where me and my sisters still live. Tried to locate my old address on google map but doesn't appear anyone got any photos? We have lost Coldcotes School and now we have lost Courtier pub, and now The Fairway at top of hill. I was informed that this site will have an old folks home built in a years time. Date: 28-Apr-2011 Email: Not displayed ________________________________________________________________________________ Name: Clifford Dawson Comment: I remember the Gipton Estate being built in the mid to late thirties to replace the slum clearance in the Mabgate/Burmantofts are at the bottom of York Road. I would be seven or eight years old and my cousins' family were re-housed at 32 Coldcotes Crescent having moved from slum housing off Pontefract Lane. I remember that they and other families were too poor to furnish a two/three bedroomed house at that stage and most of the rooms had bare floorboards in the early stages. Leeds City tramways built a spur from York Road down Gipton Approach and later,during the war, I was able to tavel by tram from the Crescent, Dewsbury Road, on the number 11 service which had a tram stop at the end of South Farm Road. Firstly 115 Foundry Approach, then from 1951 at 95 Oak Tree Walk. Many happy times in the Fairway where I had my first beer. A pint for 1s1d - if you can remember what that was!
