Devonshire hall was in the next street to where i lived in Hyde park, my parents were good friends with Commander Dave Evans and his wife Elizabeth in the late 50s and early 60ps. who were the caretakers there. when they left there they went to a place called Galphy near Ripon and had a lovely mill house.

I was a member of Devonshire Hall from 1957 to 1960. I'm fairly sure this photograph was taken during that period. If you were late for Formal Hall you had to queue by the door (where the waitresses are) and wait to be noticed; when given a sign from High Table you walked around and bowed to them before taking your seat. Commander David Evans was the Warden. He once threw me out for water-fighting but a bit of grovelling got me back in. I have some good pictures of those times.

This photograph was taken during summer term in 1957. I can identify and name a number of the students shown in the photograph including myself. I was a student at Leeds from 1954-58 and was in Devonshire Hall for the whole of my time in Leeds. Incidently,Pat Burns (see below) Commander David Evans RN AM (seated in the warden's 'throne' at the top table in the photograph)was never, ever referred to as 'Dave' not even behind his back!
