My wife Ann and I moved in to No1 with our first child in 1958, and both our two youngest children were born in the cottage. The washing shown must have been ours because we did not move out until 1964. The cottage had once been a shop, and the old shop bell was still above the side door also the large meat hooks were still in the cellars. The blocked in window on the right was a slab of sandstone which in very cold winters was covered in frost on the inside. We never had hot water we had a zinc bath filled up with water heated up on the gas cooker for bath nights! Our toilet was one in picture No6 on this page we had to pass six other cottages to get to ours very lonely at night. It was a nice little community and very rural as well. Briggs Quarry was over the road from us and we had to bring the children in when blasting was taking place because bits of rock would land in the garden we were told when this was going to be done of course, two men one at the top and one at the bottom would stand out with red flags warning people. We were sad to move but our family were growing up so we needed more room for all of us.
