New Church Place nos. 48 - 52
6th April 1964 Image shows a row of double fronted, blind back terraced houses with a shared outside toilet block on the left. Number 50 in the centre has broken and missing windows. This area was soon to be demolished and residents relocated under a Leeds City Council slum clearance programme.

Dennis Wells

I lived in number 50 with my parents and brother until 1955. My brother was ill with chest trouble and my father was advised by the doctor to move. He worked as a butcher for R V Smiths on Butchers Row in Leeds Market, so it was a real stretch to find the deposit for a mortgage so we could move to Selby Road Halton. The outbuilding you can see to the left is actually a midden, which was next to the toilets.
