Around 1962 we were "slum cleared" from Wortley Road in Armley to Harley Gardens in Swinnow. Every school morning after that we would walk down Harley Road to the bus stop, passing Hodgson's shop. We never could persuade Mum to buy us sweets to take to school! As we got older, and trusted with our bus fares for the week, we would walk the distance of 2 or 3 bus stops to save a penny on the journey. By Friday we had enough money to do serious damage to Mr & Mrs Hodgsons' "Penny Tray" on the way home. All those Penny Arrows, Flying Saucers and Holland Toffees went down a treat. I don't think we ever did tell Mum!

I remember Hodgson's shop very well .... in the 50's I often had to run down Harley Road with two shillings to get my dad some cigarettes .... that hill seemed never ending on the way back ... happy days

As a naive young boy I was sent by my mates to the shop to buy a `long stand`. The shopkeeper let me wait abit then told me I`d been tricked. He then gave me a large chocolate bar and told me to let my so-called friends know that this was the `long stand` and I should eat it all to my self. Its good to see pranks back fire.
