Directly beyond the banking on the right, stands the huge Yorkshire Water Sewage treatment plant at Knostrop. I worked for a part of the YW business there for around 15 years and previously not much further away at the Yorkshire Copper Works for around 25 yrs. Having researched my family for sometime now I have discovered I also had previous connections with this area. My Gt grandfather's nephew, Robert Gleig Bean,(my 1st cousin 2x removed) owned and ran Gibraltar Leather Works. Which stood on the right bank around 500yds upstream on the edge of what was known in 1890, as Knowsthorpe Cut. The combination of the canal and river was modified considerably around the turn of the century, as the two switched positions, hence in this photo the canal is behind the photographer. the stonework on the right also assisted the support of the pillars of the then GNR railway line bridging the river and canal, including the swing bridge, which I recall seeing in my earlier years at the YCW, which would have been also behind the photographer. In this more modern era one of the industrial estate roads of the area is called Gibraltar Island Road, as maybe the turn of the century waterway changes, left the leather works between the river and the canal for a period.
