Church And Village, Barwick in Elmet

Church And Village, Barwick in Elmet
Undated. Photograph of Barwick in Elmet church and town taken from the Earthworks. Image shows the road leading to the town with two people on the right. According to tradition King Edwin of Northumbria conqueror of British Elmet 627 AD had a residence here.

The photograph pre-dates 1900 as there is no Methodist Chapel which has been built at the far end of the stone cemetery wall on the left of the photograph. There is no evidence that Edwin had a residence there. The tradition started because antiquarians thought that the site was saxon whereas it is a mixed iron age hill fort with a norman motte and bailey inside.
