Is there anyone out there who might be able to understand this invoice? In the 'Cask Column', the figure seems to be '4 something or other', but when you enlarge it, it appears to read 11/11. The 17 in the 'Gallons Column' is much easier to understand. Even if it was for only seventeen gallons of beer, it was still a snip at 136 pints for 14s/2d. That's a fraction over 70p. I today's alien currency. How values have changed. I remember an old aunt once telling me that when she was young, children could be seen at the back door of public houses, often as early as 6a.m. in the morning, buying Gin at 2d. a bucket, to take home to their parents, or wherever. That's the equivalent of 0.833 pence in today's terms. No wonder Gin acquired the spurious title, "Mother's Ruin".

Bentleys used to use glass tubing joined together by rubber sleeves instead of stainless steel. For beer lines.

With regard to Graham Schofields comment. The casks were a valuable commodity and probably numbered. The comment in red at the top about returning casks, or being charged, tells me that. I think that 461 is the cask number and that 17 gallons refers to a return. Casks came in Firkins ie 9 galls, Kilderkins 18 galls, Barrel 36 galls and Hogsheads 54 galls, no such size as 17 galls. Take a look at the date 16 July 1869. The year 1869 is part of the printed document ie the 186 is printed the 9 is added as is the 16 July. Compare the 16 with the 61 part of 461 and you will see they are the same. 17 gallon return value of 14/2d = a penny farthing a pint. Seems feasible to me.
