Craven Gate Hotel, Dow Street no.2
Description:
29th December 1958 Image shows the side of the Craven Gate Hotel, a Tetley's beerhouse. The Tetley brewery's huntsman logo hanging outside on the right was commissioned in the 1920s and decommisioned in 2000 due to anti-huting feelings amoung the general public. On the left of the hotel a van is marked J. Cavalli, this is the same person who was proprietor of the pub. In the distance is the corporation yard chimney.

Comment:
Between 1960 - 1980 most of the domestic houses around the pub were demolished leaving the Craven Gate surrounded by industrial units. In recent years the pub struggled to be profitable and finally called "time" to it's customers in February 2002. The pub was refurbished into offices and is currently occupied by Jarvis PLC

The Cavalli family was one of 3 ice cream sellers based in the area, the others been the Grenelli and Tommaso families. They served the Hunslet and Belle Isle area before and during WW2, delivering by van (seen in the picture) and also in a motorcycle and side car.

My brother used to sell the ice cream from the motor cycle and side car. In the summer they also had a kiosk on Hunslet Moor from where they sold the ice cream. Great sing-a-longs in the pub at weekends.
