My grandmother Jane Walker nee Roberts was born at 16 Greenwich Street in 1888. I think this was her grand father John Roberts Shop.

This shop was operated and owned by Lila Roberts in the early 1930's, my Grand Mother Claira Peacock, " ne Roberts " always purchased her Potatos from here, I had to carry a stone of them up to the Recreations when my Grand Mother moved from Chelsea Street about 1936.

Clara Peacock (nee Roberts) was my grandmother (grannie) which makes A. Walker my 3rd cousin I believe. I have been looking into the relationship between Leila (not Lila) Roberts and the Roberts family who are my ancestors but, going back to the 18th century, have been unable to find any direct link between the two families. More research may find any link. The address of the shop was 14 Greenwich Street. Leila lived at 13 Gordon Street when she ran the shop (in 1939). This was the house adjoining the shop, at the back of the shop shown in the picture. Before then she lived there with her brother John. They were two of the children of Charles A. Roberts and Mary Ellen. In the 1901 census, Mary Ellen (widow) is recorded as a ‘Grocer’s Shop Keeper’ living at 13 Gordon Street with both Leila and John and other siblings. However, in the 1891 census, Charles was still alive and living with the family in Chelsea Street. His occupation was ‘Green grocer’. Leila’s grandparents were John and Elizabeth Roberts. I think John may have died in1865. In the census of 1861 he is shown as a ‘Flax drawer’s clerk’ living at 14 Danby Square in Holbeck with his wife and two children. John’s parents were William and Mary Roberts. There were quite a lot of Roberts’ about in Holbeck over this period of time and so it is quite difficult to separate the different families out. I was born in Holbeck and indeed still live there. I have done some work on my family history and I am still working on it. If there is anybody out there who may be related to me or who would like to provide me with more information I would appreciate you contacting me.
