Stanks Fire Station, Sherburn Road

2000. View of Stanks Fire Station situated on Sherburn Road. It was opened in 1973 on 6th September by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Alderman Kenneth Travis Davis. The fire station has one pump and is staffed 24 hours a day. The junction with Stanks Drive is off camera to the right.

I can remember the Fireman’s strike in the seventies. Me, Paul and Mark Hargrave used to sit with the Fireman when on their picket. We collected wood for their oil drum burner and listened to their many tales. Donkies years later I was at an Antiques fair and got talking to a guy called Naylor. It came out he was the Station commander and could remember us all those years before. What a coincidence!
