Old Red Lion Pub on York Road at the Junction with Baildon Drive.

Old Red Lion Pub on York Road at the Junction with Baildon Drive.
Description:
2000. View of the Old Red Lion on York Road. The front has been laid out with shrubs and there are hanging baskets at first floor level. The colourfully painted pub sign depicting a lion's head hangs on the corner of the building. There are plans for the new Supertram route to cross York Road by the Old Red Lion. It will turn left off Baildon Drive and meet the A64 York Road where there will be a signalised junction. Interestingly, the Old Red Lion Inn was the first Inn after the toll bar on the turnpike at Whinmoor, stage coaches used the Old Red Lion on route to and from York.

I used to go to 'play school' that was on the opposite side of York Road to the Red Lion. I thinks it's been demolished now. No idea what it was called as I was about 4 - this was around 1979-80.

Me too! I think it was called the manor house nursery, but that must have been 1973-74.

just before the playschool was demolished in the 1990s it was a collection point for second hand furniture which was then distributed to the local community

There are plans for the new SUPER-TRAM ROUTE to cross York Road by the Old Red Lion. Excuse me while I try to stop laughing, and before I 'have an accident'. I would think that the only time we will see trams back in Leeds is when Victorian logic and common sense is allowed to return to permeate the atmosphere of the Council Chamber, and give life to a 'voice' that will have the guts to say "NO!!!" to the seemingly all-powerful Road Transport Lobby.

I lived at the Red lion in the 70's. My mum and step dad managed it from 1971 to 1981. It was one of many licensed premises I lived in but I spent my teenage years there and have a lot of happy memories. I do remember the manor house opposite, one of my friends had a pigeon loft in the garden there and I remember when it was a nursery. Sadly the Old Red lion looks quite unloved these days but it was really nice when I lived there.

I lived on Sledmere Green which was just down the lane across the road from The Red Lion. I lived there between 1978 and 1983 and have fond memories of going up to the pub. I also remember my mum taking me to a ballet class which was held in the woods, which I guess must have been the "Manor House". I'd love to see a picture. My brother and I used to play in those woods for hours, fond memories!!!!
