This photo evokes many memories for me.In the 1950s,the site of the shops was occupied by Leeds co-op and housed the local depot of the dairy dept.As a young lad I used to help the milkmen based at the depot with their deliveries on the weekends to earn a bit of pocket money.I became so proficient that i used to sit in the depot after the run was finished and update their order books for them whilst they had a few jars across the road at the Brown cow pub.(just off to the left of picture) I actually became so rapt in the job ,I went to work for the co-op dairy a few years later, working from the Chapeltown road depot until I emigrated to Australia in 1966.For continuation of comments please see picture No52 in this section.

This used to be our local coop. In those days (1940s) it was a very modern building.

This was our local co-op in the 40s and 50s. It was several shops in one, the grocer's deparment had a counter for dry goods where tea, coffe, sugear etc was weighed out into blue bags. Opposite was the bacon and cheese counter where everything was cut or weighed to order. There was also a greengrocer's department and a butcher's. I also think there may have been a furniture dept on the Hollyshaw Lane side of the building. Oppostite, next to the Brown Cow was a cattle market where, as children, we were allowed to wander around, (completely unsupervised) and watch the sales.

The cattle market was then demolished to make room for "Queens" supermarket, later taken over by ASDA I believe
