Description:
11th October 1899 Great Northern Railway bridge spanning the River Aire above Thwaite Gate. This was on the branch line which ran from Beeston junction to Hunslet goods Yard. In front of the bridge, out of view, was a sports ground between the bridge and Low Road.

this area is down by Thwaite mills near hunslet. the stone pillar still stands.

This bridge was built as a swing-bridge, because at the time (1899) there was a proposal to make the canal navigable for sea-going ships - a sort of 'Manchester Ship Canal' for Leeds.
