All Saints Church

All Saints Church
1903 This strange little headless figure is set in the inner east wall of the porch of All Saints Church. The date is uncertain but thought to be post-Norman. It measures approx. 68cm X 43cm.

Yes, a rather odd figure, and although its significance may never be known, it might just be trying to tell us something. When you study it, you can see that the figure is carrying what might be a large piece of fabric of some sort - - - one corner of which is being held over the right shoulder. From the small amount of detail that can be seen, it looks as if the object hanging behind (his) back, is nearly touching the floor. It also seems that whatever it is that is hanging over (his) shoulder, can also be seen within the triangle formed by the left arm against the body. - - - Is there some for of 'pattern' discernible? Posture leads on to another question. Why is the left hand positioned behind the figure's back. Could it be that the left hand is grasping cloth to prevent it trailing on the floor?
